Breast Reduction Surgery – An Overview

Breast reduction surgery should only be considered after consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon.

Breast size is determined by your genetic makeup, hormones, body frame and weight. For many women, their breast size is proportionate to their body frame. However, some women have particularly large and heavy breasts which can cause physical problems and even psychological distress.

Breast reduction surgery, also called reduction mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure in which the excess fat, glandular tissue and skin is removed to reduce the size and weight of the breasts. The surgery will result in smaller, firmer breasts that will take on a more youthful appearance.

Am I A Candidate For Breast Reduction Surgery?

In most cases, breast reduction isn't performed until a woman's breasts are fully developed. However, it can be done earlier if large breasts are causing serious psychological or physical discomfort. The best candidates are those who are mature enough to fully understand the procedure and have realistic expectations about the results.

Breast reduction surgery can be considered if you are suffering from physical problems or psychological distress from having large breasts.
Some commonly experienced physical problems are:

  1. Backache
  2. Neck pain
  3. Shoulder ache
  4. Rashes and other skin problems or infections under the breasts
  5. Inability to exercise
  6. Poor posture
  7. Deep grooves on the shoulders

Associated psychological distress can also be a problem for people and can present as:

  1. Self-consciousness
  2. Poor self esteem
  3. Depression

Breast Reduction – The Surgical Technique

There are a number of surgical methods used to lift and reduce the size of the breasts. The chosen method and types of incisions will depend on the size and shape of your breasts, the amount of skin and tissue to be removed and your surgeon’s preference and recommendation.

The most commonly performed breast reduction technique uses incisions that encircle the areola and then extend vertically down the breast. A horizontal extension may be necessary in very large breasts. Fat, glandular tissue and skin is removed and the nipple and surrounding tissue is moved to its new position, while still attached to the blood and nerve supply.

Depending on the existing size and shape of your breasts, the horizontal incision under the breast may be avoided. Liposuction may also be used to remove excess fat from the armpit area and occasionally may be recommended as a reduction technique (scar less breast reduction). Dr Cooper will discuss the surgical technique and advise you of the best technique for you during your consultation.
