The Day Of Surgery

Thanks to advances in surgical techniques and anaesthesia, shorter recovery times are now more commonplace. Dr Cooper performs all of his cosmetic surgical procedures in accredited private hospitals. Breast Reduction Surgery generally involves a 1 or 2 night stay in hospital.

Before your procedure, Dr Cooper will make some markings on your chest while you are in a sitting or standing position. Here, you will have time to talk to Dr Cooper. He will help make you feel at ease and answer any further questions you may have.

Your surgery will take about 2 hours, and will be done under a general anaesthetic. The procedure is carried out under sterile conditions in the hospital’s operating theatre.

Following your surgery, you will have a short stay in the recovery room until you are fully awake. You will have a dressing over each breast and a small drain tube each side. For pain, you will have an intravenous drip which will already have been explained to you by your anaesthetist. You will be required to wear a post operative surgical bra to support the breasts during the healing phase. This will also help with inflammation and provide you with comfort.

After The Surgery

The dressings are left intact until the next clinic visit. A post operative surgical bra should be worn for comfort and to help with swelling. Although you will be up and about in a day or two, your breasts may still ache occasionally for a couple of weeks.

You should avoid lifting or pushing anything heavy for four to six weeks. We advise only gentle activity and arm movements in the first week. You are discouraged from performing house cleaning or other domestic duties within this time. Gentle daily exercise such as walking, is encouraged from day one. Depending on the nature of your work, you will require 1 to 2 weeks off work.
