Risks & Complications Of Mastopexy Surgery

Although the risks and complications of mastopexy are uncommon, it is important that you are aware of the possibility. The following is a list of possible risks associated with mastopexy surgery. Your surgeon will discuss these risks with you in more detail at the time of your consultation.
  • Wound infection
  • Bleeding
  • Delayed healing, with possibility of wound breakdown.
  • Haematoma (pooling of clotted blood)
  • Irregularities in the position of the nipple and areola
  • Skin irregularities
  • Keloid (heavy scar)
  • Nerve damage
  • Pain
  • Temporary loss of sensation in nipple and areola and possibly permanent numbness

Asymmetry

Small differences in shape and size of the breasts are not uncommon following mastopexy.

Nipple Sensation

Most patients will have some change in nipple sensation following mastopexy. This is usually temporary but could take months to return.

Scars

It is important to remember that surgical scars are permanent. The scars will fade in time but initially are visible. If you have a tendency to form hypertrophic scars (raised scars), or have a history of keloid scarring, it is important to discuss this with Dr Cooper at your initial consultation.

For the care of your scar, we recommend you use a topical anti-oxidant and apply massage to the area where the incision was made once it is healed. You can continue this for up to 6 months. Our nurse will discuss this with you and provide you with an appropriate product to use at home.

Silicone gel sheeting is an option for scar prevention. If you are particularly worried about the appearance of a scar, our nurse will provide you with more information about this option.

Breastfeeding

Mastopexy should not affect your ability to breastfeed because the nipple is normally not separated from the milk glands.
